About this Course

This American Red Cross certification class will prepare students to become certified lifeguards. Students must attend all sessions and pass the prerequisite swim test on the first day of class. No refunds will be given to those students that do not successfully pass the swim test. You must be at least 15 years old by the last day of class. Successful completion of the course will result in a two year certification in Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED. Prerequisite Swim Test: 1. Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breadth control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used. There is no time requirement. 2. Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under the armpits. 3. Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7-10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps. Swim goggles are not allowed for this timed event. No refunds will be given to those that do not successfully pass the Prerequisite Swim Test. An email will be sent out 1 week before class start session with additional details and instructions. Please contact us at OPRAquatics@oaklandca.gov if any questions arise or you need assistance with registration.
